The Zoom H4
recorder uses an X-Y microphone configuration. The two
microphones at the end of the device point inward at a crossing
angle. This allows the recorder to cover a wide area, and at
the same time capture sound sources in the center with perfect

Because sound is picked up by both mics at the same time,
phase differences between the L and R mic channels vanish.
